McDonald’s increases commitment on deforestation

It will work with suppliers, governments and NGO partners to develop solutions and will suspend or eliminate purchases from a supplier if an audit or other credible source reveals or the supplier is violating requirements, and if that supplier "does not acknowledge and immediately move to acceptably remediate the concern".
Francesca DeBiase, senior vice-president of supply chain and sustainability, said: “Making this pledge is the right thing to do for our company, the planet and the communities in which our supply chain operates.”
Some beef companies have, in the past, been accused of adding to deforestation by sourcing cattle that graze on affected lands.
Companies such as JBS, a McDonalds supplier and the biggest tannery group in the world, have strict policies to improve transparency across their supply chains. JBS monitors 870 thousand square kilometres “to make sure none of our products are coming from invasion of indigenous areas, deforestation or rural conflicts”, according to sustainability manager Fernando Bellese.
