Isto E Dinheiro (This Is Money), a Brazilian business publication, has published a list of 50 “good” companies, focusing on good practice in environmental management and corporate social responsibility.

Most of the firms listed are big multinationals, including Siemens, Dow, Renault, Unilever, Mars and BASF. Large Brazilian companies also feature, including packer and tanning group JBS.

JBS is singled out as an example of companies “once seen as the villains of the piece with regard to destroying rainforests” that have now become “allies in the battle against deforestation”. According to the publication, JBS deserves to be included among the 50 “good” companies for the investment it has made and the work it has done to monitor suppliers of livestock to its abattoirs. “JBS is now in control of the source of every kilo of meat it puts before consumers,” it said.

Perhaps a more surprising name on the list is that of Green Obsession. Based in Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas, 2,000 kilometres north of Brasília, Green Obsession is a fashion company with a difference. “What used to be thrown back into the rivers around Manaus,” Isto E Dinheiro said on publishing the list, “is now in demand among overseas consumers as hand-crafted fashion because Green Obsession is taking the skins of the fish from the rivers of the region, such as the tambaqui or tucunaré and turning them into bags and footwear.”

Founded by Aidson Ponciano and Rose Dias, Green Obsession also uses certified wood and natural fibres from the region in its pieces. It has built up a network of artisan raw materials suppliers, including tanners of fish leather.
