JBS puts a figure on area it monitors for deforestation
Fernando Bellese, sustainability manager at Brazilian meatpacker and tannery group JBS Couros, has revealed that the group monitors 870 thousand square kilometres “to make sure that none of our products are coming from invasion of indigenous areas, deforestation or rural conflicts".
He made the announcement during his seminar on sustainability, part of the Brazilian contingent’s series of speeches that took place during the first day of the APLF in Hong Kong.
Mauricio Medeiros, coordinator of Design na Pele, explained how the project had brought tanneries closer to the culture of design. “The world changes, people change, and design also goes through changes,” he said. “The best way to add value to our product is to incorporate our culture into the leather we produce.”
The Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB), Systemhaus’s Douglas Bauer Correa and Rafael Marino, export manager at Coming tannery, also hosted presentations.
