Theft is hurting León tanners hard

The president of an industry association in Mexico has said attacks on workers and delivery trucks and the theft of full loads of raw hides or finished leather is causing a downturn in production in León, Guanajuato, which is Mexico’s most important leather-producing area.

Speaking to local media in early April, the president of tanning industry association Cicur, Fabián Collazo Rosales, said three or four trucks are being attacked every month, each one with hides or leather worth a minimum of $60,000 each time.

Mr Collazo said: “If all the attacks were reported, we would be talking about a robbery a day. Tanners are facing an additional cost of $650 for every truck that comes from a port or from the US border to León to pay for security, and nobody dares try to bring a truck in without security.” He also said tanners were having to pay to put security cameras in place at their facilities.

According to Mr Collazo, the thieves prefer to steal raw hides or wet blue because they find it easier to sell on.
