Wet blue will become the basis for African leather exports, COMESA insists

The executive director of African leather industry body COMESA, Dr Mwinyikione Mwinyihija, has said wet blue will take over from raw hides as the base material for leather-sector exports in the organisation’s member countries.

Speaking at the annual general meeting of the International Council of Tanners in Hong Kong on March 28, Dr Mwinyihija said that 11 of COMESA’s 18 member countries have put national strategic leather plans in place.

“These policies make it clear we should be exporting wet blue, at least,” the executive director of the Addis Ababa-based organisation said. “And when these policies launch wet blue will become our base export. At the moment, between 80% and 85% of hides leave raw, with no added value.”

Dr Mwinyihija insisted that Africa is now ready to become “a giant in the global industry”.
