USDA suggests herds are rebuilding, JBS expands in beef

The latest US Department of Agriculture (USDA) cattle report has shown the country’s herd has grown for the first time in eight years, in perhaps a reflection of rebuilding efforts.

The supply grew 1% to 89.8 million head on January 1 as farmers kept more breeding animals to produce new calves. The herd fell to a 60 year low in 2013.

Separately, meatpacker and tanning group JBS has announced it is spending $75 million on expanding its Utah beef facility.

"While the US beef industry has certainly faced recent supply challenges, we are confident that the expansion of our traditional cattle mix to include beef and dairy cows will result in ample cattle supply," said Steve Williams, head of cattle procurement for JBS USA.
