Animal welfare report finds JBS among best performing food firms
11/03/2015
The Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare (BBFAW) assessed food groups in three areas: management policy and commitment, governance and policy interpretation, and leadership and innovation.
"The JBS policy supports and complies with both legal and customer requirements from the farm through to processing, ensuring animal welfare and guaranteeing that our products comply with food safety and quality standards. We invest in this area and will continue to focus our efforts on ensuring that our partners and consumers have increasing confidence in our products," said Everton Andrade, animal welfare coordinator at JBS.
The report authors said: “The proportion of companies with a published farm animal welfare policy increased from 46% in 2012, to 56% in 2013 and to 64% in 2014. This suggests that companies are starting to respond to the growing interest being paid to the food industry – by investors, by consumers, by civil society, by the media – on farm animal welfare issues, and they are becoming more willing to publish information about their approach.”
Marfig, Tyson and Cargill were also included in the report.
