EBLEX carries out USDA-style inspections of UK beef companies

26/11/2014
EBLEX, the UK sheep and beef association, has been helping ensure the industry ready should a trade agreement be reached between the UK and the US for beef and lamb.

It has worked with Defra, Food Standards Agency, the UK Export Certification Partnership
(UKECP), the Devolved Administrations and other red meat levy bodies to organise a series of US Department of Agriculture-style advisory inspections of processing plants.

The aim was to help processors fully understand the level of detailed information required by the USDA to help negotiate market access and gain approval for export of ruminant material to the US in the future.

Dr Phil Hadley, EBLEX head of supply chain development, said: “While we do not currently have access to the US market for ruminant meat, we felt it was prudent to ensure our industry is as fully prepared as possible. We anticipate an official inspection visit in early 2015 and this will hopefully enable access should an agreement be reached.”
