Pisa University and Poteco apply for tanning patent

14/01/2015
The University of Pisa and the Polo Tecnologico Conciario (POTECO), a research centre for the Italian tanning industry, have applied for a joint ownership of a patent for a process that claim produces innovative formulations for thermoplastic polymer materials and which they say can improve the sustainability of the tanning process.

Italian press reported the patent is the result of “prolonged” investigation and could lead to a spin-off company marketing the development for commercialisation.

However, details on what exactly the patent involves have not yet been published.

In November, we reported that Pisa University had worked with tanning industry technicians to develop a new tanning process using agents made from food waste.
