SLTC cements links with Bangladesh

Representatives of UK industry association the Society of Leather Technologists and Scientists (SLTC) travelled to Bangladesh towards the end of last year to build up ties with tanners and finished product companies there.

A meeting in Dhaka, sponsored by German leather chemicals manufacturer Trumpler and its local partner Saxon Technology, was the highlight of the trip.

Northampton-based industry and SLTC veteran Ian Michel gave a presentation on the history and current role of the SLTC in today’s leather industry and SLTC vice-president, Trumpler’s Stephen Trantum, offered suggestions on how tanners can address the problem of chromium VI.

At the same meeting, four representatives of the industry in Bangladesh, Quazi Salahuddin Mahmud, Mozibor Rahman, Mohammad Anwarul Hoque and Shafi-Ul-Islam, became members of SLTC.

Another prominent figure in the industry in Bangladesh, Nasim Monzur, managing director of Apex Footwear, confirmed that he will pay a return visit to Northampton to speak at the 2015 SLTC conference on April 25. Mr Nasim will give an account of the Bangladesh leather industry and provide an update on activities and improvements in light of the environmental pressures the industry is facing there.
