Hide exports could benefit from Irish trade mission to China

A delegation of politicians and agribusiness representatives has travelled to China to encourage increased trade with the Asian nation, where demand for beef is expected to rocket but which has banned European beef since a BSE scare in 2000.

Top of the agenda for the 40 firms, led by Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney, will be opening the market for beef, but hides and skins are also exported to China and a favourable trip could increase sales. “Ireland stands on the cusp of the biggest positive development for Irish agriculture in over 30 years,” said Mr Coveney.

In 2013, Ireland exported $60 million of hides and skins to China, its second biggest customer after the UK. This was up from $50 million in 2012, according to World Bank figures.
