Rugby stars visit Pittards factory in Ethiopia

Irish rugby stars Ian Madigan and Leo Cullen travelled to Ethiopia at the start of July to promote the work of GOAL, a Dublin-based aid agency dedicated to helping “the poorest of the poor”. As part of their visit, they toured a leathergoods factory in Addis Ababa owned and run by tanning group Pittards.

The Pittards Product Manufacturing (PPM) factory uses the company’s leather to make gloves and other finished products. Its relationship with GOAL goes back to April 2012 and now 18 local youngsters, having come through training at GOAL, are employees at the factory.

PPM general manager, Tsedenia Mekbib, has described the employees who came from GOAL as star employees, adding: “They are quick learners who are delivering high-quality work. They have progressed into the most complex operation of making dress gloves within a short period of time. They are enthusiastic and determined to learn more.”
