Start-up brand launches with EUR 25,000 bags

A tiny start-up leathergoods brand, based near Carcassonne in the south of France, comprising four mainly self-taught artisans, is selling its first collection of limited-edition handbags for as much as EUR 25,000 an item.

Under the unlikely brand name of O’Nolan, the bags are the brainchild of Robert Pimenta (who claims Irish roots) and of his daughter, Amalvi. With two other employees, they have prepared and launched a first collection, Bellucci, comprising two styles, Dolce and Leena, in a choice of leathers and of colours, but with a limit on five individual bags in each combination.

The leathers available include deerskin, ostrich, alligator, box calf and Cordovan. The Cordovan comes from Horween Leathers in Chicago, but most of the others are supplied by French tanner, Alran.

With the first collection complete and the first sales coming through, O’Nolan has paid particular tribute to the Alran tannery, based about 50 kilometres away in Mazamet. “They trusted us, without knowing us and allowed us to look through hundreds of finished hides before choosing the 20 or so we needed for our first collection,” the leathergoods brand has said. “As well as giving us valuable advice, they showed us great patience and generosity.”

Fine wood and high-end metal are the other materials used in each O’Nolan bag, and each one is entirely sewn by hand. The brand has said it will deliver its bags to clients anywhere in the world and will undertake maintenance and repair work free of charge.
