Nepalese footwear industry asks government for support

The duties currently stand at 13% but manufacturers are asking for discounts to make the footwear industry – one of the country’s fastest growing – more competitive.
“Reduction in customs duty on raw materials will make domestic footwear products cheaper, thus, will be proffered over foreign brands,” Hom Nath Upadhyay, president of Nepal Federation of Leather Goods Manufacturers Associations, told local press.
He added that the government needs to take action against retailers who import cheaper foreign-manufactured footwear and sell them as local brands.
