Nepal falls short on livestock plan

09/01/2012
The contribution of livestock to the Nepalese agricultural sector has fallen from 31% at the turn of the century to 23% now, the ministry of agriculture has said.

A government plan said 13 years ago that livestock would account for 45% of agriculture by 2015. Poultry, cereal products, vegetables and fruit have all increased their share in the last decade.

In the 2010–2011 financial year, dairy had a 12.3% share of agricultural revenues and meat accounted for around 10%. Production of meat from buffalo, sheep, goat, pig, chicken and duck combined reached to 277,625 tonnes with buffalo the largest contributor during the review year.

At the start of the century, official estimates put the country’s cattle population at 6.9 million head, goats at 6.5 million and water buffalo at 3.6 million head. Numbers may be lower now because, according to the ministry, credit facilities for farmers are decreasing and pasture land is shrinking.
