BASF has begun the second phase of the €90 million expansion of its Innovation Campus Asia Pacific, the Shanghai-based facility which houses leather chemical development labs and tanning drums.

An additional research and development (R&D) building will be constructed as well as auxiliary facilities, and the expansion is expected to be completed next year.

“By 2020, around 25% of BASF’s R&D employees will be located in Asia Pacific,” said research director Dr Andreas Kreimeyer. “The expansion reinforces BASF’s commitment to globalising its R&D activities and capturing growth opportunities in China and Asia Pacific.”

The campus is BASF’s most important R&D centre in the region and is expected to become one of its largest R&D sites outside of Germany.

BASF increased spending on research and development by $100,000 in 2013 to €1.8 billion, with around 10,650 scientists and researchers working in 3,000 research projects.
