Temple Grandin to receive honorary degree in Texas
Livestock expert Dr Temple Grandin has been confirmed to speak at Texas A&M's summer convocation on August 14 and will be presented with an honorary doctoral degree in recognition of her accomplishments.
Dr Grandin, a professor at Colorado State University, has received a number of honours for her animal science work, and in 2011 a film was made about her life.
“Dr Grandin is an exceptional individual in every positive sense of the term, and a person for whom I have long had great admiration - for both her pioneering work in various aspects of animal science and for all that she has accomplished in overcoming autism and sharing her experiences in a variety of highly effective ways,” said Texas A&M University president Mark Hussey.
Dr Grandin is widely known for her work in the design of facilities for handling livestock. Half the cattle in the US and Canada are said to be handled in equipment she has designed for meat plants. She has developed animal welfare guidelines for the meat industry and has been a consultant for McDonalds, Wendy’s and Burger King.
She contributed the information for a paper on our sister website, Nothing to Hide, on animal welfare and animals as valuable providers of consumer products. Nothing to Hide is an industry initiative to counter some of the falsehoods directed at the leather and meat industries.
