Temple Grandin: Export logistics need to be overcome

US academic Dr Temple Grandin, an expert on livestock treatment, has said the key to getting around controversial slaughter practices would be to find a way to ‘back haul’ the refrigerated meat containers used to transport meat.

She said currently, it is too expensive to ship these containers back empty, which stops countries slaughtering cattle on home soil and exporting the meat. If they could be put to use importing goods, live exports of cattle could be stopped.

She made the comments this week in Australia, where she has been attending the Australian Veterinary Association's conference as the guest speaker. Ms Grandin also suggested Australians should run abattoirs in Indonesia and elsewhere if they want to be sure about how cattle are treated.

Separately, reports from Indonesia this week say The Indonesian Footwear Manufacturers’ Association and the Indonesian Leather Tanners Association have asked their government not to import beef from Australia but the live cattle, to provide much-needed raw material for the tanning and footwear industries.
