Temple Grandin calls on meat industry to communicate better about progress

US academic Dr Temple Grandin, an expert on livestock treatment, was invited in mid-January to give a lecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as part of a series called the Heuermann Lectures, which focus on security surrounding food and natural resources.

She said the US
beef industry has made huge strides in livestock handling in recent years but has done a poor job of explaining this progress to the public. She said the industry should be more transparent with the general public.

One of the things that frustrates me is weve improved a lot of this and nobody knows about it,” Dr Grandin said. When I first started, maybe 10% to 20% did a decent job of handling animals. Now its 80%. I go into the meat plants now and its quiet like church.
