Sri Lanka’s apparel sector earned revenues of $4.3 billion in 2013, which the government wants to double by 2016 and is launching a footwear and leather unit to boost its offering.

Speaking at the Sri Lanka Institute of Textile and Apparel (SLITA) in Ratmalana, the minister of industry and commerce, Rishad Bathiudeen, thanked the president for providing triple deductions in the last budget for research and innovation, which has encouraged strong performance of the apparel sector.

The leather facility is part of the SLITA and will also house an internationally accredited testing lab.
