Sri Lanka is now the third biggest exporter of leather and shoes to South Asia, it was announced at this week’s Footwear & Leather Fair in Colombo, which was attended by the country’s president, Mahinda Rajapaksa.

It showcased a wide range of shoes and leathergoods and attracted buyers from Poland, South Africa, Jordan, Iraq and Bangladesh. It was organised by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and the Footwear & Leather Products Manufacturers Association.

“It is estimated that the region’s leather market potential is more than $2.5 billion - three times the actual trade levels, which is encouraging news for our manufacturers,” Rishad Bathiudeen, Sri Lankan minister of industry and commerce, told reporters. “We believe that increased value addition in the sector can bridge this gap.”
