Jordan government urged to extend incentives to garments and leather

Board member Ehab Qadri praised the results of the garments and leather industries in recent years, particularly in employing more Jordanian workers. He said the sector contributes about 29 percent of total employment in the industrial sector and represents about 26 percent of total national exports.
Further, garment and leather exports accounted for more than 35 percent of the increase in national exports during the first eight months of this year. Exports over the last decade, according to Mr Qadri, achieved an annual compound growth rate of 8 percent, and the contribution of the garment and leather industries sector to the national GDP doubled over the last two years.
Incentives would result in expanding the sector by employing more Jordanians and contributing to the growth of the national economy, according to Mr Qadri. He cited an International Trade Centre study that suggested exploiting export opportunities could create more than 21,000 jobs directly in the sector and another 12,000 jobs indirectly.
