Argentine province may build new crocodile tannery

At the end of January, the provincial government’s minister for the economy, Jorge Ibáñez, visited a specialist company called Caimanes Formosa, which runs a cayman breeding centre in the province. It produces crocodile meat for human consumption and exports skins, while helping the caimans to breed to keep numbers high.
After the minister’s visit, the company’s owner, Eric Silberstein, told local media he was confident of being able to add a tannery to the facility to add more value to the skins in Formosa.
Mr Ibáñez said the project was one Formosa was particularly proud of. He explained: “There was a time when we were worried about losing this resource entirely. This company has shown that if we look after nature, we can enjoy greater access to natural resources. In this case, we can make use of the caiman, but still let loose into nature more young reptiles than we would have without any human intervention.”
