Evolved By Nature expands reach in Italy and Thailand

Boston-based sustainable chemistry company, Evolved By Nature has expanded its reach by partnering with 14 new tanneries in Italy and Thailand to produce leather using their proprietary Activated Silk peptides.

Backed by Chanel, the company raised US $120 million in 2022 and its majority of tanneries are audited members of the Leather Working Group and include Sirte, Curtiba, Fracopel, Nuova Overlord, and Pellami Due C in Italy, as well as Kongsiri, Chun Wang Brothers, Chankij, Classic, Limsilp, Vaikijanek, and SF Leather in Thailand.

Evolved By Nature's Activated Silk L1 biofinishing system has demonstrated superior performance compared to fossil fuel-derived alternatives. Described as “pure silk in liquid form” the activated silk product is free of PFAS and other problematic chemicals.

According to the company, the Activated Silk L1 biofinishing system has the potential to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the leather industry, claiming that, over the next three years, implementation of this system could result in the elimination of 2 million kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions, with a 5-gram reduction of carbon dioxide per square foot of leather produced annually and a 76% decrease in emissions from energy used in topcoat application. Given the industry's annual production of 3 billion square feet of leather, the impact of this technology on reducing carbon emissions is significant. The implementation of this innovative technology can serve as a sustainable solution to address the carbon emissions concerns of the industry.
