Major handbag sale to be Christie’s first in Italy
31/05/2022
Live and open for online bidding between June 14 and 23, the articles to be auctioned will also be on public view at the company’s Palazzo Clerici site in Milan from June 17 to 19.
The auctioneer singled out a 2010 Shadow Birkin 40 in denim and black Evercalf leather (pictured), customised by in-house upcycling workshop Petit H, as a particular highlight, expected to reach between €10,000 ($10,700) and €12,000 ($12,800).
Designed by Ramesh Nair under the stewardship of then creative director Jean Paul Gaultier, the Shadow Birkin was first introduced by the Parisian house in 2009.
International head of handbags at the auction company, Rachel Koffsky, described the anonymous collector as a “patron and true connoisseur, whose passion and knowledge resonate throughout the designs”.
“Never before has such a large and dynamic collection appeared at auction,” added head of handbags for Christie’s Europe, the Middle East and Africa division, Lucile Andreani.
The upcoming Italy-based sale follows Christie’s first single-owner handbags and accessories sale earlier this year, which took place in Paris.
