Students reinterpret Tod’s leather and footwear
Italian footwear and leathergoods company Tod’s recently announced its latest link up with fashion students, titled Re-Generation, following last year's collaboration with London’s Central Saint Martins design school.

Brand manager at the Marche-headquartered firm, Carlo Alberto Beretta, told reporters that the main objective behind the tie-up with Instituto Marangoni in both Milan and Florence was to support Italy-based students this time around.

Twenty of the institute’s students, originally hailing from all around the world, make up the cohort, which reportedly joined Tod’s academy at its headquarters in December.

“Tod’s academy is a laboratory of ideas, imagined as a place for doing and thinking, in which our artisans accompany and support young people, offering them skills and techniques to make products,” Mr Beretta elaborated. “It is the expression of the highest culture of Made in Italy and is designed with a view to generational continuity, to give impetus to young creatives to help them in their growth path.”

The brand’s intention is for the group to take their inspiration from its self-described core values or “DNA” - specifically, sustainability - as they progress through the project, which also includes high-profile mentorship from global industry figures. Leather, weekend boots, moccasins, Tod’s lion motif and its signature studded rubber Gommino style were all listed as important design codes, ripe for ‘reinterpretation’ through this eco-minded lens.

A project-specific website was launched in early February to introduce the students and shine a light on their individual processes and outcomes.
