Growth as Gobbetti says goodbye to Burberry
Luxury group Burberry has reported revenues of more than £1.2 billion for the first half of its current financial year, the six months to September 25, 2021. This represents an increase of 45% year on year.
Compared to the same period a year earlier, there was “strong double-digit growth” in the Americas, China and South Korea. Burberry also said there had been double-digit growth in its core product categories, and it singled out leathergoods as being representative of this.
Leather highlights over the six-month period included the strengthening of a number of “pillar” products in the brand’s women’s handbag range. It arranged more than 70 pop-up sales events focusing on its Olympia bags, expanded its Lola range and introduced a new range, Rhombi, as part of its runway collection for spring-summer 2022.
Group chairman, Gerry Murphy, said these results meant a return to pre-pandemic levels for Burberry and he thanked outgoing chief executive, Marco Gobbetti, “for his vision and leadership for Burberry’s transformation”. Mr Gobbetti will leave Burberry at the end of 2021 to become chief executive of Ferragamo. His replacement, Jonathan Akeroyd, will arrive at Burberry from his current role as chief executive of Versace in April.
