Burberry plans for 100% traceable leather
British luxury goods brand Burberry has announced a biodiversity strategy centred on supporting global conservation efforts, through which it will take action to protect, restore and regenerate nature, the company said.

Applying what it described as a “nature-based” approach, both throughout its own supply chain and beyond, Burberry will now aim to make strategic moves in three key areas: protecting and restoring nature, expanding support for farming communities and developing regenerative supply chains.

Notably, the business stated that it will ensure that all “key” materials (ie, leather, wool and cotton) are 100% traceable by 2025. This also extends to recycled polyester and nylon.

One particular area of focus will be supporting the regeneration of the world’s grasslands in the leather supply chain and the livelihoods of their inhabitants, Burberry added, through its partnership with the Savory Institute’s Land to Market programme. (The Savory Institute describes itself as the first regenerative sourcing initiative for meat, dairy, wool and leather.)

Chairman of Burberry’s board of directors, Dr Gerry Murphy, commented: “Protecting, restoring and regenerating nature is key to safeguarding the planet for generations to come and we must be ambitious in our intentions and action-oriented in our approach.

“Burberry’s biodiversity strategy will not only address impacts in our own extended operations, but also help to create new systems to reduce biodiversity loss in the world’s greatest areas of need, making a meaningful contribution to global conservation efforts.”
