Encouraging signs for Australia’s sheep and cattle producers
12/10/2021
Following widespread drought between 2017-2019 then by flooding in 2020, farmers have spent the past year focusing on rebuilding herds and flocks.
The national sheep flock will rise to more than 70 million head in 2021, the largest number since 2007.
Domestic sheep and lamb prices are expected to remain high and lamb is growing in popularity in export markets.
The high prices and availability of pasture is translating into heavier animals, allowing more beef and lamb to be produced from fewer animals.
MLA said: “As 2021 progresses, the Australian red meat industry is well placed. Producers are receiving high prices due to the restocker demand, the herd and flock are rebuilding and there is a global protein deficit due to African Swine Fever (ASF). The signing of the Australia-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement also has the opportunity to unlock access to a huge high value export market.”
