Australia’s cattle exporters face multiple challenges

03/11/2020
Industry association Meat and Livestock Australia has predicted the country’s cattle exports will be 16% lower than in 2019 due to lower supply and higher prices.

The country exported 78,000 head in September, 28% less than in September 2019.

The herd is small because of years of drought meaning that breeders are trying to now trying to grow their herds. Prices for exporting to Asia have risen due to an appreciating Australian dollar and higher oil prices, which makes shipping more expensive.

The covid-19 pandemic has also affected consumer confidence, leading to lower sales of red meat.
