JBS boosts safety measures at Brazilian facilities
Tannery owner and meatpacker JBS has invested a total R$100 million (£14.8 million) in health and safety measures at its facilities in Brazil in a bid to keep the food chain intact and protect workers, as far as possible, from catching coronavirus.
The group employs more than 130,000 in the country, and has audited 135 production units against the new standards.
It hired a medical consulting company to advise on procedures, as well as 10,000 temporary workers so at-risk workers could stay at home, it said.
The bus fleet was increased by 50% and social areas were widened to help with distancing.
The company, which has also donated R$ 400 million to the fight against covid-19 in Brazil, said: “This is a mission that cannot stop since food production is one of the essential activities for the population in the context of the covid-19 crisis.”
