German Leather Federation fights against term ‘apple leather’
The head of the German Leather Federation (VDL) has told leatherbiz that he is disappointed at the result of an initial court hearing to determine whether the term ‘apple leather’ can be used in a brand’s marketing.

The company in question, accessories brand NUUWAI, was served with a cease and desist letter with regards to its wording of its material made from by-products of apple juice production combined with cotton fibres and polyurethane.

The company, which was backed in court by Peta, has changed its marketing to APPLESKIN for the time being.

Andreas Meyer, CEO of VDL, expressed his fears that ‘vegan leather’ is becoming acceptable in some sectors but added that VDL has a good track record of success in such cases. “A decision by the judge is to be made on September 10,” he added.

“VDL has been campaigning against misuse of the term ‘leather’ for years,” added another source.
“We have to continue, no matter who is using it incorrectly.”
