VDL reports good figures for German leather despite hide-price surge

03/04/2014
The German leather industry recorded substantial growth in 2013, according to figures released recently by the German Leather Federation (VDL).

Revenues increased by 15%, from €400 million in 2012 to around € 460 million last year. Exports increased by 13.8% in value and domestic sales by 17.6%.

Germany is the third largest manufacturer of bovine leather in the EU and the twelfth-largest in the world, VDL said.

However, the organisation said German tanners have complained of an increase in raw materials prices of between 20% and 30% in 2013 compared to the previous year and it claimed the price of hides has doubled over a four-year period.
