FAO elects new director general

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations has elected Qu Dongyu as its director general. He will be the ninth person to take up this role since the organisation was founded in 1945.

The election took place during the 41st session of the FAO Conference, which was held from June 22-29 in Rome, where the FAO is headquartered. He secured a majority of votes in the first round.

Mr Dongyu is currently vice minister of agriculture and rural affairs in the Chinese government. He has a strong background in scientific research related to agriculture and the environment.

He will succeed José Graziano da Silva, who has held the post since 2011. Mr Dongyu’s term will run from 1 August 2019 to 31 July 2023.
