Conference to discuss employment opportunities in agriculture

16/08/2018
More than 500 delegates will travel to the Rwandan capital, Kigali, on August 20 and 21 to attend the Youth Employment in Agriculture Conference, an event that will discuss sustainable solutions to the problem of youth unemployment in Africa.

The event is co-organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, the African Union and the government of Rwanda.

The delegates in attendance, drawn from across Africa, will examine ways to boost employment opportunities in agriculture on the continent through the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) and through the promotion of entrepreneurship.

During the conference, FAO will introduce four digital applications aimed at helping farmers improve their household nutrition, food production, income and livelihoods.

Speakers at the opening of the conference on August 20 will include Geraldine Mukeshimana, Rwanda’s minister of agriculture and animal resources; José Graziano da Silva, director-general of FAO; Josefa Leonel Correia Sacko, African Union commissioner for rural economy and agriculture; and Li Yong, director-general of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
