Water warning for Pakistan

11/01/2019
The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has warned that Pakistan is in danger of reaching ‘absolute’ water scarcity by 2025. This term means that there will not be enough water to meet the country’s demands, which is different from ‘economic water’ scarcity resulting poor management of water resources that could be sufficient.

According to a new report from the FAO, Pakistan is the fourth-highest consumer of water in the world, with its agriculture sector using up more fresh water than any other and farming communities are already being “hit hard” by the lack of water.

With help from aid organisation UKAid, the FAO is working to help communities build “resilient” farming systems in affected areas.
