World meat prices fall in July

02/08/2018
Global agricultural food commodity prices fell sharply in July, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations has said, with all the major traded items, including meat posting “notable declines” in price.

The FAO Food Price Index, a measure of the monthly change in international prices of a basket of commodities (relative to prices in 2002-2004), averaged 168.8 points, 3.7% below the June level, and the biggest monthly drop since late 2017.

The Meat Price Index averaged 170.7 points in July, down 3.3 points (1.9%) from its revised value for June. Very broadly, this means that the quantity of meat consumers could have bought for $100 in 2002-2004 would have cost $170.70 last month.

June prices were higher because of what the Rome-based organisation called “a sharp rise in bovine meat prices from Brazil”. It said this was caused by a decline in exports following the truck drivers’ strike. In July, meat exports from Brazil picked up again leading to the fall in meat prices around the world.
