Hide structure inspires Superior Tannery’s makeover
Italian architects Aquilialberg used the structure of skin as the inspiration behind a complete redesign of Santa Croce-based tannery Superior and its office in Milan.

The tannery, which supplies to leading luxury brands, has updated both internal and external spaces, and has added a research and development lab as part of the project.

Aquilialberg designed an undulating wooden aerial structure as a focal point in a 1,000 square metre central outdoor space. They said it is an interpretation of both the overhead belts that carry the hides around the tannery and the way fibres interweave through the hide.

Tannery director Stefano Caponi told the architects he wanted the new design to reflect the relationship between the environment and building as he pushes the company towards an “ever greater respect for environmental sustainability”.
