Superior’s simple secret led to Prada partnership
Santa Croce-based tannery Superior, which came into the spotlight towards the end of last year when, in partnership with luxury brand Prada, it acquired French small skins operation Mégisserie Hervy, appears to owe its recent success to one person in particular, Stefano Caponi.

Mr Caponi took over Superior in 2010 and, in four years, increased its annual turnover from €10 million to €75 million and its workforce from 20 people to around 150.

In recent comments to media in Italy, Mr Caponi said he felt he had done nothing out of the ordinary, but the strong relationship he was able to build with Prada encouraged the luxury brand to help him finance the deal to take over Mégisserie Hervy.

The small skins tannery ran near Limoges for 30 years before closing in 2013; Prada, one of its main customers, clearly felt that ongoing use of the skills of the workforce there and of the local, high-quality raw material was worth investing in. Production will start again this year.

Stefano Caponi, who fell in love with leather as a 10-year-old, when he began to visit a tannery run by his grandfather, said in his comments: “All I have done is transfer the old artisanal ways of working into an industrial production setting.”
