German automotive giants Daimler and BMW have announced plans to form a long-term strategic cooperation that will see them work together to develop technologies related to automated driving.

The initial focus of this collaboration will be on driver assistance systems, automated driving on highways and parking features. They aim to make “next-level technologies” widely available by the middle of the next decade.

Daimler and BMW have pointed to a number of advantages that will come from working together. These include sharing of skills and experience and shorted innovation cycles, allowing new technologies to come to the market more quickly.
