Punjab court orders tannery closures

India’s National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered the closure of 19 tanneries in the Jalandhar district of Punjab at the end of December.

Local media reports that the NGT found the tanneries in question to be non-compliant with pollution standards, in particular in relation to the discharging of pollutants, including heavy metals, into drains. 

The NGT has also ordered a comprehensive report on the other 42 tanneries located in the leather complex in Jalandhar.
