Stage set for fifth edition of event celebrating leather

28/09/2017
The town of Nontron, located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France, will be the location for the 2017 edition of ‘Portes du Cuir’ (Gateway to Leather), an annual event dedicated to leather craftsmanship. It runs from September 29 to October 1.

This will be the fifth edition of the event, which is typically held in areas of France that have rich pedigree in leather or leathergoods production. This is the second time it was taken place in Nontron; the inaugural edition in 2013 was the first.

This year, it will welcome more than 70 exhibitors, including businesses from the local Dordogne and Limousin areas. There will be a number of artisans from luxury brand Hermès, which has a strong presence in the region, and from the glove-making heartland of Saint-Junien.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about how leathergoods are made through a series of demonstrations and workshops. These will be delivered by a variety of groups, including those from Hermès’ leather training programme and from Les Compagnons du Devoir, an organisation with a long history of passing on artisanal skills and techniques in France.
