French leather event stresses importance of training

01/10/2018
The 2018 edition of the ‘Portes du Cuir’ (Gateway to Leather) event took place at the end of September in Thiviers, in France’s Dordogne region.

This year’s event, its sixth, was organised around the theme of training and recruitment, with the more than 110 companies present emphasising the need to put in place the schemes required to pass on specialist leather skills to the next generation.

Those taking part included makers of leathergoods, tanners, farmers, as well as representatives from training institutions and industry associations.

The event, dedicated to the promotion of leather craftsmanship, has taken place each year since 2013. It is typically held in areas of France that have rich pedigree in leather or leathergoods production. In the past this has included Nontron, Saint-Junien, Montbron and Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche.
