Bangladeshi tanners fear salt price hikes ahead of Eid

Tanners in Bangladesh have met with government officials to discuss how the high price of salt will impact the cost of preserving hides following Eid al-Adha.

The Muslim festival of sacrifice will fall at the start of September, when between 4.5 and five million cowhides, 1.5 to two million goat skins, 500,000 sheepskins and 500,000 buffalo hides will become available to tanners.

Bangladesh Tanners Association's general secretary Shakawat Ullah said the cost of salt had risen from Tk 1,000 ($13) to Tk 1350 ($16.50) in a week.

Reports say it takes 8-10kg of salt to preserve each cow hide, 10-12 kg for each buffalo hide and 1-2kg salt for goat and sheep.
