Turkey may not use all Eid al-Adha skins

Commentators in Turkey have suggested that business in the leather sector is so slow that tanners this year may fail to snap up all of the raw material that became available in mid-September at the time of the Eid al-Adha festival.

An estimated 2.5 million head of sheep went to slaughter in Turkey at the time of the festival this year, in addition to an estimated 700,000 cattle.

The skins are normally snapped up by tanners, but owing to a slowdown in demand for garment and nappa leathers in particular and to an excess of sheepskins already being available in Turkey, it looks as though some of the skins will go to waste this year.
