Tanners in Pakistan are preparing to spend as much as $55 million on the hides and skins that will become available across the country at the time of the Eid al-Adha festival, which this year is likely to start on September 1.

One of the customs for this festival is for families that can afford it to sacrifice a cow, sheep, goat or other animal, which means many millions of hides and skins become available at the same time.

The Pakistan Tanners’ Association (PTA) has estimated that 7.5 million hides and skins will come onto the market in Pakistan at the time of this year’s Eid al-Adha. It has asked the government to make special concessions on sales tax to make it easier for tanners to buy up the raw material.

It also urged the government to speed through refunds on duty that many tanners are owed by the government, in another effort to ease the cash-flow challenge of buying so much material at once.
