Argentina: Ex-offenders’ co-op turns leather into lucrative venture

An Argentinian co-operative made up of ex-offenders who learnt leather working skills while in prison now produces over 2,500 leather and clothing products a month.

The Kbrones textile co-op in La Plata presented Pope Francis with a leather-encased thermos flask during a visit to the Vatican in 2013.

A report in the Co-operative News says the co-op now employs around 22.

“We came up with the idea of setting up a co-operative so that we could have a job when we got released,” said Julio Fuque, Kbrones’ secretary.
