Brazil’s parliament calls for up to five years in jail for cattle theft

The Brazilian parliament has passed a measure to introduce stiffer penalties for people who engage in the theft and clandestine slaughter of cattle.

Under new measures that the parliament in Brasilia passed in September, stealing and illegally slaughtering cattle will bring a prison sentence of up to five years.

These new proposed penalties, which the country’s Senate still has to approve, participation in the trade, transportation or storage of stolen cattle will also bring a prison sentence.
