Coach founder passes away

Miles Cahn, who along with his wife Lillian founded US leathergoods brand Coach, has died at the age of 95.

The origins of the brand can be traced back to a family-run workshop in Manhattan in 1941. At the time, it was known as Gail Leather Products and employed just five leather workers. Mr and Mrs Cahn, who already owned a handbag manufacturing business, joined the company in 1946. They bought out the owners in 1961.

Mrs Cahn suggested making women’s handbags out of the leather traditionally used to make baseball gloves. This leather became softer and more supple after excessive wear. The bags, which were extremely sturdy, proved to be extremely popular. The brand was sold to Sara Lee Corporation for $30 million in 1985, ending the Cahns involvement in the business.
