Brazilian leather companies eye Indian market

Brazilian leather companies are hoping to generate $10 million at the forthcoming India International Leather Fair (IILF) in Chennai, according to the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB).

Seven Brazilian companies will participate at the event, which takes place from February 1 to 3. They are: Cortume Krumenauer, Couros Bom Retiro, Curtume Bannach, Hason International, JBS Couros, Liderkoll and Minerva.

The CICB said that the Indian market holds “significant growth potential” for the Brazilian leather industry. In 2016, the country imported 3.23 million square metres of hides from Brazil. Rogério Cunha, a member of CICB’s Intelligence Department, said this represents a 2.7% increase compared to 2015.

“It’s a country with potential to buy even more from Brazil, specially finished leather, with more aggregate value,” he said. He explained that Brazil only makes up 4% of India’s total import market, confirming that there is room for growth.
